Skejjel, Traffiku u Iffullar


Din il-ġimgħa ħafna studenti reġgħu bdew sena skolastika oħra, u allura din il-ġimgħa għal ħafna studenti, ġenituri u għalliema tinbidel ir-rutina u tibda rutina ġdida.

U għal ħafna minna, jerġa’ jibda wkoll it-tgergir fuq il-problema tat-traffiku. Problema li qiegħda tkompli tikber, waħda mill-ħafna problemi li għandna li jitilqu mill-fatt li l-unika mod kif qed inkomplu nkabbru l-ekonomija tagħna huwa billi nżidu l-popolazzjoni u nżidu l-ħaddiema. Xi ħaġa li kulma jmur qed nirrealizzaw li qed issir ħafna aktar insostennibbli. Dan il-pajjiż għandu limitu, u dan it-tkabbir hemm prezz xi nħallsu għalih. Prezz infrastrutturali, prezz ambjentali minħabba ż-żieda dejjem tikber ta’ bini, u prezz fuq il-kwalità tal-ħajja tagħna hekk kif kulma jmur il-pajjiż qed jinħass dejjem aktar u aktar iffullat.

Hemm diversi fatturi li wkoll mhux qed jgħinu biex tittaffa din il-problema tat-traffiku. Għadna poplu wisq marbut mal-użu tal-karozza tiegħu. Naqtgħu qalbna nużaw it-trasport pubbliku (għalkemm il-fatt li ma tantx tista’ sserraħ fuqu żgur ma jgħinx), naqtgħu qalbna nużaw ir-rota, naqtgħu qalbna nimxu. U sfortunatament qed inrabbu lil uliedna bl-istess mentalità. Meta kont għadni l-iskola jien kienet in-norma li t-tfal kollha jużaw van, minibus jew coach għall-iskola. Kien ukoll mument sabiħ fejn nissoċjalizzaw. Illum in-norma hija li jwassluk il-ġenituri. U ovvjament sa wara l-bieb tal-iskola, ma tmurx tinżel xi kantuniera bogħod u tilħaq tgħejja sa ma timxi ftit metri.

Dil-ġimgħa waqt li kont qed naqra ftit fuq din it-tema tfaċċa quddiemi artiklu tal-Kamra tal-Kummerċ (http://www.maltachamber.org.mt/en/putting-a-stop-to-malta-s-traffic-congestion) li jiddiskuti din il-problema u l-effetti tagħha, speċjalment l-effetti ekonomiċi. Hu stmat li l-konġestjoni tat-traffiku qed tiswa madwar €200 miljun lill-ekonomija Maltija, u din titla’ għal €1.2 biljun sas-sena 2050!

Il-Partit Nazzjonalista mill-Oppożizzjoni kien diġa’ għamel diversi proposti fuq dan is-suġġett, u anke’ ippubblika dokument b’diversi miżuri, fosthom trasport b’xejn għat-tfal tal-iskejjel kollha. Din hi miżura li wkoll ikkopja u wiegħed il-Partit Laburista, pero’ jidher li mhix ħa tkun qed tiddaħħal minn din is-sena. Ħasra.

Ma nistgħux ngħidu li kollox ħażin. Sar investiment infrastrutturali wkoll, bħal proġett tal-Kappara u l-propost proġett tal-Marsa, avolja ġew wara erba’ snin ta’ ixxuttar f’investiment infrastrutturali. Iżda l-pajjiż kemm jiflaħ aktar bini ta’ toroq ġodda?

Il-Kamra tal-Kummerċ f’dan l-artiklu wkoll għamlet numru ta’ proposti, fosthom l-involviment tal-privat għal sistemi ta’ mass transit. Il-Partit Nazzjonalista qabel l-elezzjoni wiegħed proġett ta’ metro/light railway li tgħaqqad l-aktar partijiet importanti. Il-Partit Laburista l-ewwel irredikola din il-proposta, issa qed jgħid li ħa jwettaqha. Nemmen li hija xi ħaġa essenzjali u li pajjiżna ilu li għandu bżonn.

L-artiklu jsemmi wkoll l-Intelligent Traffic Management System li l-Gvern ilu ħafna jiftaħar li implimenta. Ma nafx fejn qed jitħaddem dan pero’, għax ma tantx jidher li ħalla effett. Jew ġie implimentat biss fuq il-karta, u s-sistema li vera ġiet installata ma tilħaqx l-aspettattivi li tpoġġew? Jew is-sistema li biha intrebaħ it-tender lanqas biss tilħaq il-livell tekniku li kien jitlob it-tender innifsu?


Din il-problema hija waħda mill-aktar problemi akuti li qed isofri l-pajjiż, u li qed insoffru aħna ċ-ċittadini, u nemmen li bħala Oppożizzjoni issa għandna niffukaw fuq dawn il-materji u oħrajn li qed jolqtu lil Maltin fil-laħam il-ħaj, u nżommu l-Gvern kontabbli għal wegħdiet li kien għamel.

Who's the real monster?

I usually hate comparisons, but some very different reactions from the 'great unthinking' rabble do merit some analysis. In May this year, the notorious dog Star was found buried alive . A prima facie , this looked liked the most horrific case of animal cruelty, and is still considered so by some. The perpetrator was described by the sensitive and caring animal-lovers as a villain, a heartless monster, deserving of death, stoning, or even to be 'buried alive in the same manner'. But what did Mr. Vella actually do, according to the testimony heard in Court? Star was sick. It was shedding fur, and quite old already, and its owner did not afford the treatment. The Church and its riches

The above pictures has lately been doing rounds on facebook. Posted comments refer to injustice, hypocrisy, and of the Church not practising what it preaches. It seems it has become a common trend to blame the Church for everything under the sun. Hitting at the Church is the new way of looking cool. But before joining the bandwagon of shares, likes and comments, let me try to analyze the points this photo is trying to make. The first one: the Church is immensely rich. Well, it could be, but what do most of these riches constitute? Most of the Church's "riches" are fixed immovable assets, of which most are important human heritage. They can practically never be sold. Let's just say that the Pope sells all his adornments (provided anyone wants to buy them), maybe even Michelangelo's Pieta, and once we're at it , yes, maybe he should also sell the Sistine Chapel and have it converted to apartments.
